Meet our Captains

Salty Roots NC is owned and operated by it’s Captains Scott and David who will ensure you always enjoy your experience!

Captain Scott Burrell

Captain Scott Burrell

Captain Scott Burrell is a USCG licensed captain who has been fishing Wrightsville Beach waters for 25+ years. Through his passion for fishing, he studied under some of the best fishing guides the Carolinas have to offer. Scott purchased his first inshore boat in 2004, in Charleston SC, where he learned to prefect his inshore fishing styles.

After moving back to Wilmington in 2006, Scott upgraded his first boat multiple times until he found the perfect fishing vessel…Regulator Marine. This allowed access to some of the best grouper holes on the east coast and expanded his love for fishing.
Scott is also a local oyster farmer, cultivating some of the most flavorful bivalves in America. He has several local farms open to visitors through what Scott refers to as his Oystour…a 2-hour family friendly farm adventure.

Captain Scott looks forward to meeting you for a safe, fun, fish filled day on the water.

Captain Kesler

Captain Kesler

Captain Kesler has had a love of saltwater fishing since the age of 12 when he started spending summers in Myrtle Beach and fishing inshore and offshore out of Murrells Inlet South Carolina while working a summer job at a family owned hotel. David went to school at UNCW where he continued his love of the ocean and fishing and obtained his OUPV (6 Pack) Captains License at the age of 20 while still in college.

David then acquired his first boat at he age of 21 and begin saltwater fishing out of Wrightsville Beach. Since that time, Captain Kesler has owned or operated over a dozen boats and various fishing charter businesses on the coast of NC. Captain Kesler ran a charter service out of Morehead City and Southport before relocating back to Wilmington.

David has had numerous articles published in fishing magazines and has also been a guest speaker at the Saltwater Sportsman seminar series. In the offseason David enjoys commercial fishing, fishing in other countries (Costa Rica and Panama are favorites) and doing boat transports on the east coast of the United States.

Captain Kesler is also a certified diver and his many years of experience allow him to know when and where to go for various species. David holds numerous citations including Bluefin tuna in excess of 600 pounds, a 112 pound wahoo, 31 pound red snapper and 40 pound red grouper among the more notable catches. Captain Kesler and Captain Burrell will work hard to make your day on the water a fun and successful one!

Boat number 1:

Boat number 1 is a 1999 Regulator Marine 23’ Classic. The term “they don’t make them like they used to” inspired the 2018 upgrade for the power behind the boat. Twin, 2018 Yamaha 150 HP 4 Stroke engines propel Salty Roots to a cruising speed of 27 knots and a max speed of 44 knots. Just when we thought the Regulator couldn’t ride any better in snotty seas, the addition of engine weight proved us wrong as we are amazed by the performance.

When you are 50 miles offshore, redundancy is your friend so the Regulator is equipped with two ICOM VHF radios, two Garmin GPS/Depth Sonars, two Yamaha engines, two bilge pumps, EPIRB device and brand new safety gear including flares, PFD’s, medical box and fire extinguishers. We take safety as our number 1-3 priorities.

Boat number 2:

Boat number 2 is a 2003 22’ Southern Skimmer which also received a motor upgrade. We purchased the skimmer from the original owner who had the floor removed and replaced with solid fiberglass…which in turn added weight and stability. When we purchased the boat, it came with a 90 HP Suzuki and we wanted more performance, so we upgraded to a 140 HP which blisters the skimmer at a top speed of 42 knots. This boat is an amazing ride for a flat bottom boat which drafts about 4” of water.

Just because we stay in sight of land on this boat does not mean safety again isn’t a top priority. This boat is also equipped with brand new safety gear including PFD’s, throw cushion, fire extinguisher, flares, VHF radio and Garmin GPS/Sonar.
